KIERUNEK: INTERNATIONAL AND POLITICAL STUDIES

INTERNATIONAL AND POLITICAL STUDIES są kierunkiem łączącym wiedzę z zakresu stosunków międzynarodowych, nauk o polityce, ekonomicznych oraz studiów kulturowych. Program pozwala zdobyć interdyscyplinarne wykształcenie w zakresie nauk społecznych i humanistycznych oraz przygotować studenta do podjęcia studiów drugiego stopnia. Poprzez interdyscyplinarne zespolenie treści poddziedzin z zakresu nauk społecznych i humanistycznych, których  wspólnym mianownikiem pozostaje polityka, studenci uzyskają solidną podstawę do rozwijania zainteresowań sektorowych – realizowanych w ramach specjalizacji.

Ponadto studia zorientowane są na poszerzenie percepcji i złożoności współczesnego świata oraz wielowymiarowości zjawisk i procesów społeczno-kulturowych, służą również wyjaśnieniu zasad funkcjonowania organizacji i instytucji krajowych oraz międzynarodowych zajmujących się szeroko pojętymi zagadnieniami polityki.

American Studies

The program of bachelor studies in the field of American Studies is providing students with basic knowledge about issues related to North American and Latin American societies, politics, culture and media. Students therefore gain interdisciplinary knowledge, allowing them to understand both the specifics of the United States and Latin American countries, their involvement in the problems of the modern world in a political, cultural and economic context. The program is characterized by comprehensive nature and aims to thoroughly familiarize students with world views characteristic of the Americas and equip them with practical skills of moving in American issues, in all its aspects.

Asian Studies

Asian Studies is a specialization that focuses on different dimensions of social, political, economic and cultural development of Asian countries. Particular emphasis is placed on teaching a selected Asian language – Chinese or Japanese. The students will acquire the knowledge in Chinese and Japanese cultural heritage; East and South Asian politics: political systems of China, Taiwan, Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and Southeast Asian countries; East and South Asian social development: social changes and challenges across the region with special regards to poverty alleviation and migration; East and South Asian international politics: major players include the United States, China, Japan, South and North Korea, Russia, and Southeast Asian countries; East and South Asian economic dynamics: major trends in economic integration in the East and South Asia region,  as well as cooperation between Europe and East Asia; East and South Asian business characteristic points and special features in regards to the style of negotiation in the region. The graduates will be equipped with skills that will prepare them to work in companies and institutions that are involved in diplomatic, economic, cultural or social contacts with East Asian countries or international organizations operating in Asia. They will be able to pursue careers in national administration and self-government authorities that are responsible for development of foreign policy. The graduates may also be employed in cultural, educational and research institutions, or in publishing and mass media organizations that deal with East Asian affairs.

Intercultural Communication

IC links the knowledge and skills based in cultural sciences, social, economic, historical and international relations. The program allows to obtain interdisciplinary humanistic education and prepare the student for second degree studies. Studies broaden the perception of the multiculturalism of the modern world and the multidimensionality of socio-cultural phenomena and processes, as well as explain the principles of functioning of national and international institutions dealing with broadly understood cultural issues. It allows the adequate perception of cultural dimensions in the contemporary world, including issues related to research on identities (from local to global, from ethnic to national and transnational), multiculturalism, intercultural relations (including studies on diasporas, migration processes and the situation of indigenous people) ), cultural programming and gender studies. During the course students are given knowledge and skills in the field of culture in the international aspect, including knowledge about world literature, art, theater, film and knowledge in the field of social communication, media and marketing basics.

Politics& Policy in Europe

The speciality is focused on theories and practices of functioning of European states, regional and local entities of public life, self-government, economic and political entities, non-governmental

organizations, social movements and the media. Students will get an opportunity to analyze factors influencing the dynamics of state, regional and local development. They will also develop skills, which will enable a creation of strategies and evaluate in the sphere of public and social life. Students will learn about the political systems of European countries, their determinants and political mechanisms. They also get acquainted with the factors that create political cultures. A separate research area is concentrated also on the characteristics of the European Union as a whole, its institutions and ways of acting. During the course students will learn about the processes of creating stereotypes and historical-political myths in European societies and their use by politicians to ensure public support for themselves. This should give the graduate of this specialty a critical attitude. In the course of the classes students will try to create electoral slogans in order to reach a particular electorate. Theoretical basics combined with acquired and improved practical knowledge make the graduate well prepared to perform analytical and advisory functions in research centers, think-tanks, political parties.

Security Studies

Specialty Security Studies encompasses subjects within national and international security. The offered subjects are dedicated to the phenomenon of security in terms of administration functioning on the local  and central level. Additional focus is to be put on the most significant security and special forces’ tasks. There is also place for subjects dedicated to current international situation and contemporary security threats. All the selected topics concerning security aspects are placed within three dimensions: global, national and regional. What is more, students become acquainted with different aspects of security: political, economic, military or cultural. Such multi dimensional explanation of security enables all students to gain the broadest knowledge possible concerning the field of studies.

The graduates acquire knowledge concerning national security, international security system and the rules of functioning of all national and international security subjects. Inclusion of elements of social science in the educational process, especially in the field of defensive capability and political science together with humanities and jurisprudence, allows graduate to acquire broad knowledge that will allow him or her to identify, describe and to prevent both military and marital threats. What is more, graduates will be familiar with the procedures of crisis management.

Completing the educational process provides necessary competences, abilities and skills required from the central and local administration’s employees, especially within crisis response and management units. It also gives opportunity to work in international and non-governmental organizations, diplomatic and consular posts, corporations on positions of risk assessment and in the institutions within state’s protective and defensive structures.

Po ukończeniu INTERNATIONAL AND POLITICAL STUDIES I stopnia absolwent może znaleźć zatrudnienie w krajowych i międzynarodowych (rządowych oraz pozarządowych) instytucjach politycznych, społeczno-gospodarczych, kulturalnych i medialnych: ambasadach i ministerstwach, organizacjach międzynarodowych (IGO’s, NGO’s, TBO’s), organach administracji publicznej (samorządowej, państwowej, ponadnarodowej, itd., instytucjach wymiany kulturalnej i społeczno-gospodarczej, mediach, reklamie, public relations itd. Szczególny nacisk położony został na wykształcenie i rozwijanie zdolności analitycznych i syntetyzujących, co da absolwentom możliwość ubiegania się o zatrudnienie w międzynarodowych i krajowych instytucjach analitycznych (np. think-tankach, zespołach eksperckich itp.). Ponadto realizacja studiów w języku angielskim oraz wprowadzenie do programu dodatkowego języka obcego (konferencyjnego) na poziomie B2 pozwoli na zdobycie wiedzy i umiejętności umożliwiających rozpoczęcie kariery zawodowej w międzynarodowych organizacjach (takich jak: NATO, UE, ONZ i innych) i ich oddziałach/sekcjach krajowych.

Absolwent studiów pierwszego stopnia jest przygotowany do kontynuowania studiów na poziomie magisterskim (studia II stopnia), na kierunkach, których wymagania wstępne przewidują uzyskanie kompetencji zdobytych na I stopniu kierunkach: International &Political Studies, stosunki międzynarodowe i politologia, których programy realizują I&PS. Student, który ukończył studia pierwszego stopnia posiada umiejętności umożliwiające kontynuację studiów na wyższym poziomie w uczelniach zagranicznych we wszystkich krajach europejskich i pozaeuropejskich, które przewidują trzystopniowy system kształcenia uniwersyteckiego. Absolwent studiów I stopnia może kontynuować kształcenie na studiach podyplomowych oraz kursach dokształcających UŁ i innych uczelni.

Wymagana znajomość języka angielskiego na poziomie B2 i drugiego języka obcego na poziomie A2/B1.
