Absolwent VIP UŁ nagrodzony za wspieranie kultury

Jerzy Czubak, VIP alumnus of the University of Lodz, President of Amcor Tobacco Packaging Polska, was awarded Wiosła Kultury [Paddles of Culture] prize of “Gazeta Wyborcza” and Monopolis in the category of a patron of culture, i.e., an entrepreneur thanks to whom artists from Lodz can spread their wings. The jury appreciated, among others, financial contribution of Amcor to the development of humanities, i.e., Tadeusz Kotarbiński Memorial Prize, which was established six years ago at the University of Lodz.

 

University of Lodz is a partner of the first edition of “Wiosła Kultury”, a prize for the most active, extraordinary individuals who create the culture of Lodz. Apart from Jerzy Czubak, two other individuals associated with the University of Lodz were in the finale of the competition – a sociologist dr Izabela Desperak and Maria Nowakowska.

Jerzy Czubak supports Prof. Tadeusz Kotarbiński contest not only financially. Every year he participates in the ceremonial Gala of Professor Tadeusz Kotarbiński Memorial Prize at the Arthur Rubinstein Philharmonic in Lodz. The prize, established 6 years ago at the University of Lodz is awarded to an author of the best piece of work in the field of Humanities.

What is more, this Vip Alumnus of the University of Lodz gets engaged in other events which are important for our University community. During the official beginning of the academic year 2017/2018 he gave a great lecture entitled: “A humanist in business, i.e., how humanists change the world”.

-  When preparing this lecture, I decided to find out who the richest Polish entrepreneurs are by education. And it turned out that they studied Sinology, Law, German Philology and other humanities. Today they run huge businesses and manage great organisations  –  said Jerzy Czubak.

Jerzy Czubak is a theatrologist by education (he has graduated from Cultural Studies at the University of Lodz). Thanks to him Amcor group has supported, among others, such festivals as: Camerimage, Rubinstein Piano Festival, Władysław Strzemiński's Fine Arts Competition as well as Powszechny Theatre in Lodz, Museum of the City of Lodz and Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz. In the Amcor factory at ul. Aleksandrowska 55 there is an art gallery, which for 20 years has been exhibiting achievements of professors, lecturers and graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts (ASP) in Lodz. Jerzy Czubak is also one of the founders and a director of "Łódźstock" - the cult festival in the 1980s.

Currently, Jerzy Czubak is a member of the Managing Council of the University of Lodz PAM Center, member of the Council of Muzeum Sztuki MS2 as well as one of the advisors of the President of the City of Lodz. Since July 2015 he has been a President of Amcor Tobacco Packaging Polska, one of the world's largest packaging producers.

At first the finale gala of “Wiosła Kultury” was supposed to take place in the middle of March. However, due to the pandemic the award ceremony was held on October 15, 2020.

On October 15 there was also a debate “Kultura po pandemii” [Culture after the pandemic] with participation of representatives of local governments from all over the country. In the debate, the University of Lodz was represented by dr Agnieszka Gralińska-Toborek, an art historian, Assistant Professor at the Department of Ethics at the University of Lodz.

University of Lodz not only educates future creators of culture, in various disciplines and specialisations, e.g., art historians, ethnologists, film scholars, cultural scientists, theatrologists. Our students and personnel actively cooperate with culture institutions, they get engaged in organizing exhibitions and festivals. Therefore, presence of people associated with the University of Lodz in the first competition for the best culture animators in Lodz is hardly surprising.
