UNIVERSITY OF LODZ IN THE EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY OF POST-INDUSTRIAL CITIES ALLIANCE (UNIC)
UNIC (/juːˈniːk/) is one of 41 alliances of European Universities.
European Universities are transnational alliances that will become the universities of the future, promoting European values and identity, and revolutionising the quality and competitiveness of European higher education. They will do so by joint implementation of innovative solutions in the field of education and science and deep institutional integration.
OUR RESEARCH: WE FOCUS ON COMMUNITY PROBLEMS RELATED TO CIVILISATION CHALLENGES IN THE AGE OF GLOBALISATION
We look for solutions to homelessness and social exclusion problems. We study patterns of socio-economic segregation to facilitate eradication of poverty. We look for new methods of anti-cancer therapy. We collect great DNA databases of Poles to prevent civilisation diseases more effectively. We propose solutions that promote integrated urban revitalisation. We implement new methods of waste degradation. All over the world, we discover and protect new species of plants and animals. We help access water in desert areas. We analyse the language of hate and try to find its causes. We analyse cultural and religious heritage of Poland and the world in many aspects. We study the genetic material of people living thousands of years ago to get to know our ancestors and ourselves better. We consistently promote the development of humanities in all its varieties.
COMBINED WITH THE SURROUNDING
A university is more than just education and research – it is a place where proactive attitudes are built, cooperation is taught and where awareness of the needs of others is developed.
Our University constitutes a part of the community of Lodz. We feel citizens of Lodz and just as other residents of Lodz – we love this city! Every day we engage in its life offering our knowledge and infrastructure for presentation of significant issues. We actively support city projects, we cooperate with local government, foundations, festivals and residents.
WE ARE A SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE UNIVERSITY
For years we have been conducting activities that aim at positive influence on the environment.
We are an important scientific, research and teaching centre, and we want to implement and show how to implement socially responsible initiatives and those serving sustainable development in practice. We are pleased about the subsequent projects that the university community brings to life. They are the result of our cooperation and commitment. They include, among others, classes that popularize learning among children and adolescents, educational campaigns that build positive habits of students and employees of the University, and projects aiming at helping those that need care and support.
WE ARE A DIVERSE UNIVERSITY
University of Lodz aims at integrating and sharing its diversity – this way the university makes a difference to the social and economic well-being of its community through the research, teaching, and public events and activities. We promote equality through diversity that is enriching. We have initiated the project called University Diversity which aims at integrating the academic community and in particular at exchanging students.

One philosopher used to say: “Do something, love somebody, don’t be a rascal”.
It all started with these few words: Openness. Involvement. Diversity. Boldly looking ahead. Good job, which manifests itself in continuous searching for knowledge, providing support, questioning everything that should be questioned. Professor Tadeusz Kotarbiński was this philosopher – the first Rector of the University of Lodz. Every day we do our best to follow the path he has set. Will you join us?
THE MEMORIAL PRIZE OF THE FIRST RECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LODZ
At the University of Lodz we believe in humanities and its contribution to social life, shaping attitudes, building frameworks, establishing norms in which not only humanists but also representatives of sciences, opinion leaders, citizens move - in a word: all of us who participate in social life.
This is how we realize the mission of the first rector of the University of Lodz - Tadeusz Kotarbinski. In order to emphasize the role of contemporary humanities, but also the impact the professor had on it, in 2015 we established the Memorial Prize of the First Rector Of The University Of Lodz Professor Tadeusz Kotarbiński. It is a distinction of nationwide rank and at the same time a promotion of research, humanistic publications and humanities itself.
