PROFIL PRACOWNIKA: Iwona Witczak-Plisiecka

I received my MPhil (Master of Philosophy) in Linguistics (1993) from Trinity College, Dublin University, Ireland, and MA (1992) in English studies, PhD (2001), and D.Litt. ('habilitation') in English linguistics from the University of Lodz, Poland.

My research interests are primarily in sociopragmatics, the nature of meaning in natural language, the semantics-pragmatics interface and the philosophy of language with focus on performativity. Being a freelance legal translator, I am also interested in the relation between language and the law, problems of linguistic and regional identity, and the theory of (specialised) translation.

In the years 2008-2012 I was involved in distance learning programmes at University of Dalarna, Sweden. In the years 2010-2012 I acted as Management Committee Member for Poland in COST Action ISO703 "ERN-LWE": 'European Research Network on Learning to Write Effectively', between 2013 and 2019 I was involved in a research project focused on metaphors in legal language and affiliated with the Department of Law, University of Lodz (OSF, ID 220257, 2013/09/B/HS5/02529).

I was editor of Lodz Papers in Pragmatics (2004-2010) and Legilingustics, at present I am a member of advisory board of JoSTrans, a journal of specialised translation and a member of editorial board of Journal of Intercultural Communication. I am editor-in-chief of a linguistics journal Research in Language.

I specialize in linguistics, mainly in sociopragmatics and discourse semantics, with an emphasis on speech acts and performativity, i.e. a functional perspective on “doing things with words”. This functional perspective is explored in the context of using language in a first and second language (development of sociopragmatic skills in L2 and in intercultul communication), in translation, in issues of free and hate speech, and specialised (especially legal) discourse.

I am editor-in-chief of Research in Language, an international linguistics journal.
