Konferencja o związkach filozofii i nauki w XVII wieku

“17th Century Philosophy, Its Sources and Continuations in Natural Sciences: Astronomy - Astrology – Medicine” is a title of an international conference, which will be held on 8-10 August 2021. Yet another edition of an annual, nationwide event pertaining to the 17th century philosophy will take place in Lodz, Poland. The conference is organised by the University of Lodz Centre for Natural Philosophy and the UL Department of Philosophy History. Presentations will be delivered in a hybrid mode.

The subject of interest of participants of the next edition of the conference is the relationship between the 17th-century philosophy and early modern science. The aim of the activities of the researchers gathered during the event is to identify and analyse connections and mutual inspirations that can be observed between philosophical thought of the seventeenth century and scientific reflection, in particular in the field of mathematics and natural sciences.

Science that is present in the title of the conference, is not interpreted by us in a contemporary meaning, which is often limited to exact sciences. During the conference we will hear reports from research concerning development of science, which was very complex, full of dead ends and blind alleys. We are particularly interested in the issues, which to us – contemporary men – seem solved and forgotten, and which in the past allowed for the most significant discoveries – explains dr Marcin Leszczyński from the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Lodz.

Among the topics that are going to be discussed during the conference, we can find, among others: defence and critique of vivisection in the 17th century, Copernican critique of the traditional assumptions of astronomy or a plenary lecture on various, often surprising understandings of materialism – a philosophical attitude, which is today considered as the foundation of science.

The event will be attended by numerous distinguished guests from Poland and the world, including:
•    André Goddu (Stonehill College, Easton, Massachusetts)
•    Adam Grzeliński (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń)
•    Jozef Matula (Palacký University Olomouc)
•    Bogusław Paź (University of Wrocław)
•    Joanna Usakiewicz (University of Bialystok)
•    Charles T. Wolfe (Université Toulouse)

The conference will be held on 8-10 September 2021 in the assembly hall of prof. I. Lazari-Pawłowska (3rd floor in the building of the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the University of Lodz, ul. Lindleya 3/5, Lodz). More information, including the full programme of the event, can be found on the event fanpage: https://www.facebook.com/events/2614204308873637/
