DHC UŁ z najwyższym wyróżnieniem Uniwersytetu Bolońskiego

Sigillum Magnum, the highest honour of the University of Bologna, has been awarded to Prof. Krzysztof Pomian who is a philosopher, a historian, an essayist and Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Lodz (2017). Professor Pomian is one of the most outstanding Polish humanists, whose scientific achievements go far beyond our country’s borders.

In the preface to one of his most famous books, Prof. Pomian wrote: "For me, Europe is a fragment of my biography and an intellectual adventure." Having lived in France for many years, Professor Krzysztof Pomian is also an ambassador of Polish culture.

As reported by the "Science in Poland", the authorities of the oldest university of Western civilisation have expressed their appreciation for his scientific activity in various humanities and social fields, as well as for his commitment to promoting the heritage of European culture.

Prof. Krzysztof Pomian's research interests focus on history, politics and European philosophy from Russia through Central Europe to the Mediterranean world, from antiquity to the present day. He is a researcher dealing with extensive problems, not avoiding syntheses, and at the same time a master of "small forms". As a keen observer and active participant in social life, Prof. Pomian shows that nurturing European values – human rights, solidarity and tolerance – is very dear to him. He received an honorary doctorate from the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (2003) and the University of Geneva (2005). He was honoured with the Juliusz Mieroszewski Journalist Award in 1984, premio letterario Montesilvano in 1992, and the Ksawery and Mieczysław Pruszyński Prize of the Polish PEN Club in 2006. He was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres [Order of Arts and Letters] (2005), the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor (2011) as well as the Order of Polonia Restituta, Commander's Cross with Star (2012).

Sigillum Magnum is a silver and bronze medal established in 1888. It is awarded by the university to important and influential personalities from the world of science, culture and politics.
